Big Chief holds some of the best all around sport climbing in the Tahoe area and offers routes spread throughout the grades ranging from 5.7 to 5.13d!. The rock type is volcanic tuff and the area has more than 130 sport climbs with dramatic views of the Truckee River Canyon and surrounding mountains.
Big Chief’s routes range from vertical to overhanging and can feel tiring and strenuous for some. The ability to climb 5.9 is recommended but not necessary.
Dramatic Views and Epic Climbs
Big Chief Lies off of the USFS 06 Road In Truckee, and takes about 25 minutes to drive to. The USFS 06 Road can be accessed in Sierra Meadows in Truckee or from Brockway Summit Via H73 Road.
Meeting place will be at the 06 Road Trailhead in Sierra Meadows. Driving arrangements will be decided before your trip.
